Our very first project, with which Gilbert van der Lee started BREED Integrated Design. An ode to our philosophy of bringing architecture and structural design closer together. The villa was designed by Powerhouse Company.
Structurally, the house is a stack of different industrial building techniques. The basement is constructed with in-situ concrete. The roof, with extreme cantilevers, is a complex steel structure. Because of the natural surroundings, we chose to keep the facades free from structural elements and let the “furniture elements,” like the chimney, bathroom, kitchen, and staircase, support the house. That is why the bookshelves in the North wing were made of solid steel plates and function as a structural Vierendeel frame, carrying and stabilizing the structure of the roof.
